We aim to give every student the opportunity to experience success in learning and to achieve as high a standard as possible. We will assist students to develop skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing which will enable them to express themselves creatively, imaginatively and to communicate with others effectively.
Our aim is to ensure that all students’ needs are met with each individual achieving some form of accreditation. We offer a mix of qualifications ranging from GCSE English Language/ Literature to Functional Skills and Entry Level.
We follow the AQA GCSE syllabus that allows candidates to demonstrate their ability in functional English; to investigate and analyse language; and to experiment and use language creatively. It is also most suitable for those who wish to explore English language in greater depth and experience greater breadth of English studies via its Literature specification.
The majority of students at the centre follow the GCSE English Language specification which covers the functional elements of English providing learners with the skills and abilities needed to take an active and responsible role in their communities, their everyday lives, work places and educational settings.
From January 2014, GCSE English accreditation will be awarded for 40% controlled assessment and 60% exam in the form of a written paper. Students unable to complete the GCSE English assessments will be entered for Functional Skills Levels 1, 2 or Entry Level accreditation.
Students whose attainments fall significantly below the expected level at a particular key stage will undergo an individualised programme of literacy intervention and differentiation. Similarly, students whose attainments exceed the expected level at a particular key stage will be provided with suitably challenging work.
At KS3 We recognise the need for an English curriculum that focuses on communication skills and literacy development. We aim to provide a curriculum that is meaningful and challenging to all students. All staff are responsible for improving the literary and communication needs of all students. The intended outcome is to provide students with opportunities to:
- Develop the ability to listen, to process information and to respond.
- To interact and communicate effectively with others in a range of social situations.
- Have access to a wide range of literature and activities to enrich and broaden their experiences and knowledge.
For the purpose of assessment the APP level descriptors are used to assess Reading/Writing and Speaking and Listening.
